I must admit that I am a bit of a foodie, hence my love of photographing food and anything to do with it. Having spent the last twenty years as a photographer, I have learnt many of the skills needed for good food photography. Earlier this year I was on BBC TV’s Ready Steady Cook show as a food photographer, and my food photography has gone from strength to strength since.

The types of cameras I have used over the years started with large format film, now I use the same type of large format camera but with a 39 million pixel high-end digital back fitted to a sliding plate on the back of the camera, this still gives me all the perspective control I used to have but with vastly increased quality and artistic possibilities.

In spring 2009 I was commissioned to photograph a range of tomatoes for a leading UK importer. The brief was open, I could do just about anything as long as the tomatoes looked stunning and fitted the crop for each page in a book that was to be produced. I chose to shoot them on a dark background to show the colours off at their best, and with minimal propping so we could produce a series of photos that had a common style.
The final photographs went down very well with my client and their clients, here’s the feedback:

“I meant to email you this morning because the day went amazingly well. The book
was a terrific success and the supermarket team told me that the photos were "out of
this world" (name check to you and contact details included)

I am really pleased that I found your website!

The best news is that I have already been told by my MD that I can do it again
next year so consider yourself booked!

I am really hopeful that I can use the some of the images in a publicity
campaign that we will run with the supermarket to launch 2 new Finest lines in November.
They are talking about potentially running some adds in the foodie mags (Olive,
Delicious, Good Food etc) - I will keep you posted.
Thanks again Darrin”

The studio is based in Hertfordshire, close to the A1M and with easy links to central london which is only 25 miles away. We have a fully fitted kitchen and use high end digital cameras with a fully calibrated colour workflow. The shooting area of 740 square feet is more than ample for most subjects, it has a large 11x13' floating ceiling that can be lowered and tilted to control lighting, together will all the usual lighting and reflectors needed to produce quality photographs. There is a balcony area suitable for a high viewpoint and a courtyard garden which can used for shooting as well.
